The Great East Coast Blizzard

Last weekend the east coast watched as a giant snowstorm swept through the neighborhoods. In Philadelphia, we spent the the day watching as the accumulating snow kept rising on the yard stick. With an official total of 26 inches around the King of Prussia area, brave civilians ventured out on foot, by ski, by car, and even by bicycle to get the full blizzard experience, first hand. Others grabbed their sleds, snowboards, and snow mobiles and headed for the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for some snow day fun!

Luckily for the east coast, Monday brought some warmer temperatures and sunshine allowing for snow piles to begin melting immediately. Now, we are about one week post-blizzard and we can see dramatic decreases in the snow accumulations. With that said, we do still have a significant amount laying around. However, if the sun keeps shining like it has been we should be seeing grass again in no time!

Take a look at my photos taken during the blizzard.

WXPN Patti Smith Tribute Show

This week's WXPN Free at Noon was a tribute to Patti Smith's album "Horses". The tribute band consisted of a number of local musicians. While the band members remained consistent, they brought in a different lead singer for each song. Each singer brought their own energy to each track on the album giving the audience a great mid-day show. The musicians involved in this tribute band included: Madalean Gauze, Candice Martello of Hemming, Jennifer Pague of Vita and the Wolf, Arc Divers' Emily Zeitlyn, Abi Reimold, Rachel Brown, Cat Park of Amanda X, and Cynthia G. Mason bought the album to a close. The whole group came back out for an encore song to end the show on high note.

New Cycling/Pedestian Trails

At the end of October (October 30th to be exact) a new trail opened that connects the 2-mile Cynwyd Heritage Trail to the Schuylkill River Trail. If you have not had a chance to check out the new Manayunk Bridge Trail, I suggest that you do. While a marathon runner will probably prefer staying along the Schuylkill trail for a straight route, the new bridge allows us all to travel (safely) across the river.

As I mentioned earlier, it connects the Cynwyd Heritage Trail with the Schuylkill River trail. This is not a direct connection but it is easy to get from one to the other. As the start of the Manayunk Bridge can be accessed at Dupont & High Street; where there is also a parking lot for trail goers to use. I think it is great how creating new bike/running trails as become such a common thing.

As a cyclist, I am always looking for new rides to go on and I look forward to exploring the new trails as they open. As a photographer, I enjoy capturing the scene of the new trails to share with other people.

Autumn in the City of Brotherly Love

The leaves are changing color. The trees are coated in golden yellow and red. 2015 seems to have brought us a beautiful autumn season. One of the best spots to take in the changing of seasons is a trail known as "Forbidden Drive". The trail runs through Wissahickon Park; stretching from Northwestern Avenue to Wissahickon Transportation Center. However, for the more ambitious trail users, it can easily be extended by continuing onto the Schuylkill River trail along Kelly drive. While the usual runners, bikers, and walkers make use of this scenic trail, horseback riders can be found all along the trail as well.

Check out some of my photos from along the trail, and definitely check it out in person.

Another Regatta Season is Upon Us...Navy Day 2015

With the summer being over, school back in session, and the leaves beginning to fall the rowers are taking to the river once again. Regatta season is back! Sure there are regattas over the summer but those are not quite the same as fall races which include all the area high schools and many east coast universities. This past weekend was the sort of the like the start of autumn with rowers - from high school through masters - competing in the Navy Day Regatta, on the Schuylkill river.
